8 Windmills: A New Narrative of life

Greece 2023 The thesis explores the reimagining of communal life in the village of Exo Lakonia, located in the Lasithi region of Crete. Our interest in this area was sparked by a particularly prominent and symbolic feature of the landscape: the hill with its eight traditional windmills. Once an integral part of daily life in the 20th century, these windmills now stand abandoned, most of them in an advanced state of decay.

The aim of the project is to revitalize this site and reintroduce it as a place of meaning and identity. By preserving the physical traces of the windmills and engaging with the topography and ruins with sensitivity, the proposal seeks to develop a new architectural narrative that respects the natural and cultural landscape. Rather than imposing new structures, the intervention aspires to harmonize with the terrain and the remnants of the past, fostering a renewed relationship between place, memory, and community.

Architect Engineer | Lighting Design Specialist | Furniture Design Enthusiast


Faidra Tsapanidou is an architect engineer with a Master of Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), specialized in lighting design. Born and raised in Chania, Crete, she is currently based in Athens, Greece.

Her work bridges the fields of architecture, interior atmosphere, and object design, driven by a strong conceptual approach and a sensitivity to spatial experience.

With a deep passion for furniture design and materiality, her practice focuses on creating meaningful environments — from the scale of a single object to the complexity of a complete space. Her design language balances functionality with aesthetics, while continually exploring how light, form, and texture shape perception and emotion.






Η Φαίδρα Τσαπανίδου είναι αρχιτέκτων μηχανικός με μεταπτυχιακό δίπλωμα Αρχιτεκτονικής από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (ΕΜΠ), με εξειδίκευση στον σχεδιασμό φωτισμού. Γεννημένη και μεγαλωμένη στα Χανιά της Κρήτης, ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα.

Το έργο της γεφυρώνει τους τομείς της αρχιτεκτονικής, της ατμόσφαιρας εσωτερικών χώρων και του σχεδιασμού αντικειμένων, με γνώμονα μια ισχυρή εννοιολογική προσέγγιση και έμφαση στην εμπειρία του χώρου.

Με έντονο πάθος για τον σχεδιασμό επίπλων και τη χρήση υλικών, η πρακτική της επικεντρώνεται στη δημιουργία ουσιαστικών περιβαλλόντων — από την κλίμακα ενός μεμονωμένου αντικειμένου έως την πολυπλοκότητα ενός πλήρους χώρου. Η σχεδιαστική της γλώσσα ισορροπεί ανάμεσα στη λειτουργικότητα και την αισθητική, ενώ διερευνά διαρκώς πώς το φως, η μορφή και η υφή διαμορφώνουν την αντίληψη και το συναίσθημα
